Norfolk Street Arts delivered 25 inclusive community-led creative sessions in Sunderland City Centre, designed to support mental wellbeing, build civic pride and strengthen community connections. Centred around Norfolk Street, the project reactivated neglected public space through creative, environmental and social activity. Participants took part in planting, mural-making, storytelling and peer-led workshops, fostering a renewed sense of ownership and belonging.

The project placed a strong emphasis on inclusive engagement. Working with ICOS (International Community Organisation of Sunderland), it involved members of the city’s Eastern European, BME and migrant communities. In partnership with Creative Minds, it supported neurodiverse individuals through tailored sensory-aware workshops. Sessions co-designed with EDEN also ensured access and cultural relevance for Deaf participants. All sessions were publicly promoted, ensuring a broad mix of involvement.

A blended marketing approach, including a user-friendly website and social media outreach, helped make the programme widely accessible. In total, 130 people from diverse backgrounds took part. Many reported reduced isolation, improved mood and greater connection to both their community and the city. The project’s legacy is one of visible positive change – in public space and in the lives of those who helped to shape it.

This project was made possible thanks to the support of the National Lottery Community Fund and the players of the National Lottery.
